This Wine Loving Swedish Entrepreneur Just Launched A Sleek Range Of Luxurious Electric Boats - USA - Forbes
Swedish Entrepreneur Konrad Bergström bought a house in the coastal city of Palma de Mallorca on the Spanish island of Majorca (Mallorca, in Spanish) for strategic reasons. The city center provides rapid proximity to an airport with direct flights to much of Europe, allowing this frequent traveler to move with rapid ease. Additionally, the waterfront provides a testing ground for his fleet of electric powered luxury X Shore Eelex boats.
Bergström’s prominence on the high-tech entrepreneurship scene grew from his decade at the helm of Zound Industries—A Swedish firm that grew rapidly manufacturing wireless headphones as well as speakers. In 2012 he switched from working with musical sound amplification to muffling boat sounds: he created a company producing electrical water craft.
His company X Shore
Bergström spoke about his history.
"Going from Mr. Loud to Mr. Silence. I had a dream in 1996 to do this boat company because I’ve always been very close to the sea, and have a big passion for sea sports—surfing, windsurfing, wake boarding. In 2012 I saw that politics were starting to wake up, and Tesla came with an amazing concept that was both powerful and included great design. I started to build my own prototype and it was much harder than I thought. It took until 2016 to get there. Being an entrepreneur, you have challenges every day. But I see nothing impossible in this case."
One unexpected technical challenge emerged from the realization that non-combustion propulsion still produces sounds. Squeaks, groans and whirrs from vibrations of bearings, moving shafts and spinning propellers are normally masked out by the roar of a combustion motor. To engineer a solution for silence, X Shore developed a magnetic gear box and removed grease from bearings. Bergström took the required time to find appropriate solutions.
